When you’re producing a tutorial video, the product to be described really needs to be understood inside and out. But that’s not enough. Tutorial production videos must convey a sense of trustworthiness, competence and polish to earn the respect of potential viewers. This is where you come in. Your skill and guidance in the production process will assure a top-notch video that gets and holds the viewer’s attention.
The "tutor" needs a clear script. It does not matter how well he/she knows the products or service to be demonstrated. This script should answer some important questions. How do you get attention? Remember that you have less than 8 seconds to do it based upon average attention span. How do you connect with the audience? What problem is this tutorial supposed to solve? What do viewers need to know before you begin? Will they be following along? What are the steps that you need to show the viewer in the course of the tutorial? Tutorials are best when they are short and to the point. Otherwise, they lose interest fast. People are here to learn. A plan will help avoid taking the viewer down a "rabbit hole" or losing them altogether.
The "show and don't tell" rule applies here. Anything that is discussed or referenced even in passing needs a visual. This may be usage demonstration in the tutorial. Shots of someone walking through a process on the computer, images of referenced items. If giving everything discussed a visual would make the production chaotic, this tells you that script is probably too complex, overly detailed and needs to be rethought out and simplified.
A tutorial is not the time to show off fancy over the shoulders, long angles, etc. While the production should engage and entertain, the tutorial itself should be the focus. Limiting the shots to mostly mediums and necessary close ups will help the focus stay properly placed. What does the viewer need to see and from what angle to best understand what they are being taught? This is the primary focus in a tutorial video production
